A Peaceful Refuge in Todgha Gorge

We welcome you to our beautiful home: a calm and intimate refuge for your stay in the Todgha Gorge. The spacious, south-facing rooms are flooded with natural light, and boast private balconies from which you can enjoy views of the river below and the high cliffs soaring above. Our large terrace overlooking the shaded gardens is the ideal place to relax in the evening (it's also the only place in the gorge where you can drink a post-climb beer!).

As a traditional guesthouse, we share our dinners around one table. We find that guests enjoy the communal atmosphere and the opportunity to meet and discuss with new people from around the world. We cook vegetarian meals using fresh, simple, and only natural ingredients--some of which come from our own garden. Of course if you would prefer to eat meat, we can arrange a meal with meat for you.

Built in 2017 from only natural materials like bricks, lime, earth, straw, and plaster, our house stays warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Water is heated by a solar panel and, thanks to the generous North African sun, hot water is always readily available. In our garden we grow kitchen herbs, a variety of vegetables, fruit trees like lemon, orange, apple, plum and fig, almond trees, olive trees, and Julio's impressive roses. We also keep chickens and bees.

From your base at A Secret Garden, you can enjoy world-class climbing in the Todgha Gorge, as well as ample opportunities for hiking, walking and mountaineering. We offer guided adventures with the only certified mountain sports instructor in the area.

Your hosts: Julio, Emily, and Chester

Julio is French but has been a resident of Morocco for the past 10 years. Emily and Chester, from Canada, joined him one year ago. Together we run Aventures Verticales Maroc, a society for developing climbing in the Todra Gorge. Our main activities are equipping and maintaining the climbing routes in the gorge, as well as guiding/instructing climbing and mountaineering. We have a climbing shop in the village and produce a climbing guide book, now in its 4th edition, with the express purpose of raising money for continuing to equip the climbing routes here.

Of course we also run A Secret Garden -- a home not only for climbers who come to the gorge, but any traveller seeking a warm, comfortable place to stay with hosts who are passionate about what they do!

When I booked Secret garden, I was expecting to simply stay there, but we got so much more. We had great conversations, fantastic food, a real home-like atmosphere and we also met other great people, we really did not want to leave once our time there was done.

This was without a doubt the best place I stayed in Morocco. It was warm, comfortable and very welcoming. The food was incredible (they accommodated me being a celiac no problem). The showers were nice and hot not to mention everything was spotlessly clean. I highly recommend staying here.

We felt at home from the moment we were greeted by Julio who owns this fabulous multi-story home in the heart of the Todra Gorge. Julio is by far one of the most sensitive and caring people we've met on our many journeys. He's the real deal who turns environmental issues into action with home composting and other environmentally friendly initiatives that he employs at his home.
